Portuguese Parliament mulls GM crop ban
The Portuguese Parliament is considering draft legislation that seeks a ban on the planting of genetically modified crops. The Ecology Party Greens have proposed the legislation. The country is a minor producer of GM maize based on Monsanto insect-resistant YieldGard Corn Borer (MON810) maize, the only GM maize line approved in the EU. Portuguese growers reportedly planted some 8,500 ha of the crop last year, just 6% of the country’s maize area. The EU is allowing member states to prohibit the sale and use of GM maize from next month. The Portuguese draft bill’s first reading takes place this month.
