Brazil provisionally approves Dow's GM Enlist maize
The Brazilian national technical commission for biosafety, the CTNBio, has provisionally approved Dow AgroSciences’ genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Enlist (DAS40278) maize. Enlist provides tolerance to 2,4-D herbicide, and acetyl CoA carboxylase inhibitors. The recent acquisition of the Brazilian seed company, Coodetec, will play a significant role in the introduction of Enlist in the country. Dow forecasts a 40 million acre (16 million ha) global market for Enlist maize. The company will make a limited introduction of the maize in the US this year. Full marketing authorisations in Brazil require government assent through a majority of its 11-member biosafety council and is typically decided within two months of the CTNBio’s recommendation. The CTNBio approval was one of two it made at this month’s meeting.
