Brazil provisionally approves Monsanto's GM maize
The Brazilian national technical commission for biosafety, the CTNBio, has provisionally approved Monsanto’s genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready 2/LibertyLink (NK603xT25) maize. The LibertyLink T25 event confers tolerance to glufosinate herbicide, while NK603 is tolerant to glyphosate. Each of the events had previous commercial approvals. Full marketing authorisations require government assent through a majority of its 11-member biosafety council and is typically decided within two months of the CTNBio’s recommendation. The product includes Bayer CropScience’s LibertyLink maize event. Monsanto has a cross-licensing deal with Bayer covering use of Bayer’s herbicide tolerance technologies. The CTNBio approval includes food and feed and use and was one of two it made at this month’s meeting.
