Monsanto’s first RIB maize in Brazil raises yields 10%
The adoption of Monsanto's genetically modified herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant Genuity VTPro3 (MON89034xMON88017) maize has resulted in average 10% yield gains in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, the company reports. It launched the product in the 2013/14 season as the first refuge-in-a-bag (RIB) product to become available in Brazil. It confers resistance to several pests including corn rootworms (Diabrotica spp), as well as tolerance to glyphosate herbicide. Monsanto presented the findings along with grower witnesses relating their experiences at the Expodireto Cotrijal trade fair. It recommends the planting of conventional maize on 10% of the area planted with the RIB maize.
