Industry urges fair review of EU GMO rules
The ongoing review of EU rules on genetically modified crops should focus on timely approvals for safe products, says a group of 14 associations representing the agricultural and food industries. Approvals must be allowed to continue while the review is in process. Regardless of the outcome of the review, its conclusions must not be applied retroactively, says the group, which includes the biotechnology industry association, EuropaBio. Its list of “core principles” is in response to the review of the decision-making process for GMO authorisations, ordered by European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker when he came to office last November. He instructed EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis to complete the review in six months.
