German BfR retreats on glyphosate carcinogen review
The German federal institute for risk assessment, the BfR, will not intervene in the ongoing EU re-evaluation process for the herbicide, glyphosate. Germany is the rapporteur member state and the BfR was charged with the toxicological and residue chapters of the renewal reassessment report. Last week, the institute criticised the decision of the UN WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to classify glyphosate as a carcinogenic substance in Group 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans). It had carried out a preliminary review of the database on which the IARC’s evaluation was based and stated its intention to perform a thorough review once the monograph becomes available.
