Brazil OKs Dow's Enlist soybeans
The Brazilian technical commission for biosafety, the CTNBio, has approved the sale and use of Dow AgroSciences’ genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Enlist (DAS68416) soybeans. The technology confers tolerance to 2,4-D and glufosinate-ammonium herbicides. The commission provisionally approved Enlist (DAS40278) maize last month. The recent acquisition of the Brazilian seed company, Coodetec, will play a significant role in the introduction of Enlist technology in the country. The public prosecutor’s office is aiming to ban the use of 2,4-D in the country through the courts, and attempted to impose an injunction against the CTNBio continuing the approval process of 2,4-D-tolerant GM crops. Full approval requires government assent through a majority vote of a council of 11 Ministries in the coming months.
