Further slide in EU oilseed plantings
Oilseed plantings in the 28 EU member states are expected to be down by 2% this season to 11.3 million ha, predicts European grain trade association Coceral. In its latest estimates in March, the group puts the oilseed rape area down 2.6% to 6.5 million ha, with sunflowers down 4.4% to 4.1 million ha. The predictions emphasise the decline predicted previously by EU farmers groups. They had warned that farmers were turning away from oilseeds because the EU suspension of neonicotinoid insecticide seed treatments was leading to pest control problems.
