EFSA to update GM allergenicity guidance
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is to update its guidance on the assessment of allergenicity of genetically modified crops. It is inviting industry and other interested parties to contribute their views at a workshop in Brussels, Belgium on June 17th. The assessment of potential allergenicity is part of the EU GMO approval process. The current guidance dates from 2011. Following a review of more recent technical and scientific developments, the EFSA has identified possible new methodologies, together with a need to further standardise test conditions used in allergenicity studies. The guidance update will also reflect new rules issued in 2013 relating to applications for approval of GM food and feed. The rules introduced additional data requirements for assessing potential allergens. Online registration for the workshop is open on the EFSA website until May 6th.
