US exemption request for antibiotic in Florida
The US EPA has received an application from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) for an emergency exemption to allow the use of the antibiotic, streptomycin sulfate, to control citrus canker (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri) on grapefruit. The disease causes significant economic losses and has become a serious threat to the viability of the grapefruit industry in Florida, the FDACS points out. It seeks an exemption to allow the use of up to two applications of streptomycin sulfate on a maximum of 47,656 acres (19,286 ha) between June and September 2015. The request is open to public comment until May 27th.
