US moves toward approving GM potato

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) looks likely to approve J R Simplot's next-generation genetically modified Innate potato line, which the company contends will transform the potato processing industry. The new potato, called Event W8, contains the same traits as Simplot's first-generation Innate potatoes that were approved last year by the USDA -- low acrylamide potential and reduced black spot bruising -- but has also been modified to resist late blight disease (Phytophthora infestans) and to produce less reducing sugars.
