US study shows silver nanoparticles combat disease
US researchers have found that silver nanoparticles from an extract of the plant, wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), are effective against several strains of the fungal pathogen, Phytophthora spp. The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Central Florida and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Since the nanoparticles display multiple ways of inhibiting fungal growth, the chances of pathogens developing resistance to them are minimised, the researchers say. The research has been published in the Journal of Phytopathology.
