EU confirms non-approval of rhubarb extract
The European Commission has confirmed its decision not to approve rhubarb (Rheum officinale) root extract as a “basic substance” under the EU agrochemical registration Regulation (1107/2009). It had earlier proposed the action after the EU assessment identified specific safety concerns. The French Institut Tecnique de l’Agriculture Biologique had applied for approval for fungicidal use. Basic substances are not predominantly used as agrochemicals, but may be of value for plant protection. They are eligible for an unlimited approval period, but have to meet strict safety requirements.
