Brazil to align boll weevil control measures

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture’s plant health office, the DSV, is updating its cotton boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) control programme, the PNCB. It is redefining strategies on research, technical assistance on prevention and control of the pest. The DSV recently attended an industry workshop at which it was lobbied to bring its programme more up to date. Office director Luis Rangel explains that the DSV will co-ordinate strategies with industry and academics. “The Ministry of Agriculture will co-ordinate public actions in the unified plant health and environment care system, the Suasa, and arrange to mordernise plant protection legislation, which will allow the full implementation of the programme,” he says. Professor Paulo Degrande of the Federal University of Grande Dourados says that the extended programme will align what is occurring among different states in order to create a large-scale national campaign. “We intend to launch an intensive awareness campaign among growers on what measures they need to take.”
