Canadian container collection down in 2014
Over 4.5 million empty pesticide and fertiliser containers were returned to collection sites throughout Canada in 2014, according to the industry's CleanFarms programme. That compares with over 5 million in 2013. Most containers were collected in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta, with totals of 1.7 million and 1.3 million, respectively. The volume of plastic collected amounted to 1.7 tonnes, with 646,969 kg in Saskatchewan and 480,556 kg in Alberta. In addition, some 206,170 kg of empty bulk pesticide containers (>23 litres) were collected for recycling. The total number of containers collected since the programme started in 1989 amounts to over 105 million.
