Biosafety violations up in Turkey

Violations of Turkey’s Biosafety Law rose in 2014 following a High Court decision the previous December to suspend two import approvals for genetically modified crops, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) reports. Those were for Monsanto’s insect-resistant YieldGard Corn Borer (MON810) and herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant YieldGard VT Triple (MON88017xMON810) maize. The FAS notes that some 150 violations of the 2010 Biosafety Law are being prosecuted, some under the charge of “biological terror”, while the country amended regulations in May last year to remove some liability for responsible parties due to contamination or low level presence of GMOs.
