New Zealand OKs weed privet biocontrol

The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved the release of the privet lace bug (Leptophya hospita) as a biological control agent for weed privet (Ligustrum spp). The application was submitted by the Waikato Regional Council on behalf of the National Biocontrol Collective. Privet is considered to be a significant weed and is too abundant in many regions to be controlled by conventional methods, the EPA points out.
