Plant Biotechnology Patent Watch (Q1 2015)
During the first quarter of 2015, a total of 45 patent applications from 20 different assignees were published covering genetically modified plants and methods of producing them. The plant biotechnology patents were mainly sourced from the US Patent and Trademark Office. The top seven crop protection and biotechnology companies filed 18 applications, accounting for 40% of the published patents. BASF led the field with six applications, followed by Syngenta with four filings, DuPont and DuPont Pioneer (four), Monsanto (two),, Dow AgroSciences (one) and Bayer CropScience (one). Publications from universities were mainly from the US and Asia, emphasising on molecular tool build-up, and genome-wide research.
