Australasia OKs DuPont Pioneer's 4114 maize
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has recommended the approval of imported food derived from DuPont Pioneer's genetically modified insect-resistant and glufosinate herbicide-tolerant 4114 maize line. The maize produces the Bt Cry1F toxin for the control of lepidopteran pests and the Cry34Ab1 and Cry35Ab1 toxins against coleopteran pests. It is equivalent to the 1507x59122 stack that has already been approved by FSANZ but the 4114 line requires separate approval as it is a unique molecular event. DuPont Pioneer intends that 4114 maize be cultivated mainly in North America, with no intention to apply for cultivation approval in Australia or New Zealand. The 4114 line has been approved in the US, Canada and Japan, with food/feed approvals in Mexico, Taiwan and South Korea. The FSANZ draft assessment is open to public comment until July 14th.
