Dow develops "fingerprint" tool for spinosad products

Dow AgroSciences has developed a "fingerprint" technology aimed at detecting counterfeit versions of its spinosad-based insecticides. Such products are composed of natural spinosyns produced by a proprietary bacterial strain in a fermentation process, the company points out. "Our ability to detect and identify the origin of the production strains via proprietary molecular forensic methods is a scientific achievement that translates into value for our customers and reinforces their confidence in our products," Dow states. The company issued a warning in 2011 that it would monitor and combat the illegal manufacture and sale of spinosad-based products.
