Bayer seeks Australian OK for GM canola hybrid
Bayer CropScience has applied to the Australian Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) for the commercial cultivation of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant InVigor x TruFlex Roundup Ready canola. The line has been produced by conventional breeding of the InVigor and TruFlex Roundup Ready lines to provide dual herbicide tolerance and a hybrid breeding system. Bayer plans to conduct demonstration trials and small-scale seed production at selected sites, followed by full commercial release. InVigor (MS8 x RF3) canola is tolerant to glufosinate-ammonium. It was approved for commercial release in 2003. TruFlex Roundup Ready (MON88302) canola is tolerant to higher rates of glyphosate than the first-generation Roundup Ready canola. It was approved in 2014. InVigor x TruFlex Roundup Ready canola has not been grown in Australia but it has been field tested in Chile, Canada and the US. The OGTR expects to issue a risk assessment and management plan in late November 2015.
