New Zealand OKs biocontrol agent
The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved an application to release honeysuckle stem-boring beetles (Oberea shirahatai) as biological control agents against the invasive weed, Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica). The application was made by the Hawkes Bay Regional Council on behalf of the National Biocontrol Collective. The EPA held a public hearing on the application last month. Eight submissions were received in support of the application and two opposed it.
