Calyxt/PBL deal on wheat trait
The US subsidiary of French genomics company Cellectis, Calyxt (New Brighton, Minnesota), has entered an exclusive licensing agreement with UK early-stage investment company Plant Bioscience (PBL - Norwich, UK) for a bread wheat trait generated using gene editing. The trait provides endogenous resistance to powdery mildew of wheat (Blumeria graminis f sp tritici). “As part of our product development strategy, we are now in-licensing traits developed by world class academic institutions to boost our pipeline of products in various crops,” says Calyxt chief executive officer Luc Mathis. PBL is jointly owned by the UK John Innes Centre, the Sainsbury Laboratory and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Calyxt is the new name given to Cellectis Plant Sciences in May.
