US university to test mosquito control

The US University of Kentucky's department of entomology has applied to the EPA for an experimental use permit (EUP) to test a new strain of the bacterium, Wolbachia pipientis, for the control of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that act as human disease vectors. The researchers plan to release male mosquitoes infected with W pipientis strain wAIbB at four sites in Fresno County, California between autumn 2015 and December 31st 2016. The released mosquitoes are expected to mate with indigenous female mosquitoes, causing conditional sterility and population decline.
