Fructose to gain EU basic substance approval
European Commission proposals to approve fructose as a basic substance have been voted through by the EU Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed. Fructose is for use on apple trees with indirect action in the control of insects. The application was submitted by the French Institut Technique de l’Agriculture Biologique (ITAB) in March 2014. Basic substances are not predominantly used as agrochemicals, but are considered useful in plant protection. They are eligible for unlimited approval periods, but have to satisfy strict safety requirements. The approval requires publication in the EU Official Journal before coming into force.
