Australasia to OK MON87751 soy imports

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) proposes to allow the import of food containing Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant MON87751 soybeans. The soybeans express the Bt Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 toxins for the control of lepidopteran pests such as bean shoot moths (Crocidosema aporema), sunflower loopers (Rachiplusia nu) and fall armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda). The soybeans are aimed at commercial cultivation in South America and cultivation approval in Australia or New Zealand is not being sought, FSANZ notes. MON87751 soybeans have been deregulated by the USDA. The FSANZ decision is open to public comment until August 26th.
