US EPA drafts cumulative risk guidance
The US EPA has issued draft guidance for conducting a screening level of analysis of pesticides that may have potential cumulative risks. It is aimed at more efficiently prioritising cumulative risk assessments. Prior to the development of this framework, such assessments required extensive resources, large amounts of data and sometimes involved labour-intensive scientific analysis, the EPA points out. The draft guidance covers the screening of available information to identify groups of pesticides that may have a common mechanism of toxicity (ie common mechanism groups). It also provides guidance for screening available information on those candidate groups for potential cumulative risks, which may lead to more refined cumulative risk assessments. The draft guidance is open to public comment until August 28th.
