US sees mixed signals from Mexico on GMOs

Mexico sends mixed signals in its attitude towards the cultivation of genetically modified crops, according to the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). The country is developing drought-tolerant crops and traits allowing a reduction in fertiliser and herbicide use as well as GM trees. However, in 2013, the only GM crop in commercial production in Mexico was Monsanto's glyphosate-tolerant MON88913 cotton, with a permitted area totalling 25,000 ha.
