Florasulam gains renewed EU approval
The European Commission has confirmed that the EU approval of Dow AgroSciences’ herbicide, florasulam, has been renewed. Proposals to renew the active ingredient were voted through in July. The new approval commences on January 1st 2016, the day after the existing authorisation expires. The conditions attached to the approval have been changed. Under florasulam’s first EU authorisation in 2002, member states approving products were required to consider the potential for ground water contamination. In the renewed approval, this condition has been removed and replaced with a requirement for member states to pay particular attention to the risk to aquatic organisms and non-target terrestrial plants. Renewals last for 15 years, compared with the standard ten years for first approvals.
