Sumitomo/IVCC to test new ai for mosquito control

Sumitomo Chemical and the non-profit UK-based Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC – Liverpool, Merseyside), are to start testing a new insecticide active ingredient in Africa for the control of malaria-spreading mosquitoes. The unnamed ai has a novel mode of action that is different from those of existing insecticides for malaria control, Sumitomo notes. The safety and efficacy of the ai have already been demonstrated in laboratory tests, the company adds. Four classes of insecticide are recommended by the UN WHO for malaria prevention and no new class has been introduced in the past 40 years, resulting in some mosquito populations developing resistance.
