EU confirms fructose approval as basic substance
Fructose has been granted EU approval as a basic substance under the EU agrochemical registration Directive (1107/2009). The approval commences on October 1st 2015. Fructose is for use as an elicitor of a plant’s natural defence mechanism. The application was submitted by the French Institut Techique de l’Agriculture Biologique, with the primary use being on apple trees as an aid in insect control. The approval was supported by the EU regulatory committee in July. Basic substances benefit from unlimited approval periods, but have to satisfy strict safety requirements.
