Germany to impose GM crop ban

Germany has initiated a move to stop the growing of genetically modified crops under new EU rules allowing member states to opt out of cultivating EU-approved GM crops, reports Reuters. German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has written to German state governments about his intention to make use of EU Directive 2015/412 allowing member states to impose national restrictions or bans on grounds such as policy objectives, co-existence problems, and socio-economic impacts. The rules came into force in April.
