Greece and Latvia to opt out of GM crops

Greece and Latvia have requested the European Commission that they be removed from the scope of Monsanto’s request for EU re-authorisation allowing continued cultivation of genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize. New EU rules under EU Directive 2015/412 allow member states and devolved administrations to opt out of cultivating EU-approved GM crops on grounds such as policy objectives, co-existence problems, and socio-economic impacts. Germany and Scotland, UK earlier expressed their intention to make use of the rules.
