Canada clears paraquat in special review
The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) proposes to allow the continued registration of the non-selective herbicide, paraquat, following a special review of the active ingredient. The review was triggered by the EU's decision to ban the herbicide for health and environmental reasons in 2007. The EU was concerned about the risks to workers from applying the herbicide in backpack equipment and the potential reproductive risk to birds and potential risk to mammals. A decision by the Swedish authorities to ban the herbicide in 1983 was also considered. The Swedish concerns related to occupational health risks, persistence in soil and sediment, and potential effects to sediment-dwelling organisms.
