Brazil to open fruit fly control centre
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture is to fund the setting up of an IPM centre for the control of fruit flies. The centre is to be located in the south within the Ministry body, the Embrapa Uva e Vinho’s, field trials facility in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul state. It will go under the name, Moscasul. The facility will encourage research and technology transfer in control of the pest in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Parana states. The Ministry is contributing funding of R$2 million (US$600,000) to the centre. Minister Katia Abreu says that agriculture party FPA MPs are considering adding R$1.3 million (US$400,000) to the venture.
