Brazil MPs debate agchem use reduction

Brazilian MPs last month debated pesticide use levels in the country amid calls for a gradual reduction. The select committee on the environment and sustainable development held a public hearing at which MPs referred to a report earlier in the year from the national cancer institute, the Inca. It revealed that use of such products passed 1 million tonnes per year in 2009, representing some 5.2 kg of used pesticide per capita. The Inca argued that the approval of genetically modified crops had boosted pesticide use.
