MEPs urge suspension of GMO import approvals

The European Parliament has called for the suspension of any EU approvals of genetically modified crops for food and feed use until the ongoing review of the authorisation process has resulted in improvements. Furthermore, the European Commission should withdraw its recent import approval for Monsanto’s glyphosate herbicide-tolerant NK603xT25 maize line because glyphosate has been classified as probably carcinogenic by the UN WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the MEPs say. The calls come in a resolution drawn up by the Parliament’s Environment Committee and approved by the full Parliament by 403 votes to 238, with 50 abstentions.
