EU studies long-term effects of GM crops

Post-market monitoring of genetically modified crops will play an essential role in detecting and possibly preventing any long-term adverse effects on the environment, concludes a study commissioned by the European Commission's Environment Directorate General. It calls for the development of models and indicators to allow EU-wide surveillance of potential long-term effects. Of these, the "highest priority" targets are the indirect effects on cultivation and agricultural management caused by growing herbicide-tolerant crops and the use of their complementary herbicides, the study says.
