New Zealand confirms parathion-methyl ban
The New Zealand Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) has confirmed its proposed decision to ban the organophosphate insecticide, parathion-methyl. The ERMA received eight submissions, all in favour, in response to its preliminary recommendation to revoke approvals ( Agrow No 553, p 16). The ERMA concluded that parathion-methyl posed an “extreme” risk to operators and a “high” risk to the environment. Continued approval offered “negligible” benefits to New Zealand. The absence of a registered product for several years suggested that alternatives provided the same or better benefits.
