Spain approves 120-day dichlorophen use

Spain has authorised the use for 120 days of the fungicide/bactericide, dichlorophen, for soil treatments. The Ministry of Agriculture approved a request from the agricultural trade union, COAG Almeria, allowing its use from June 1st to September 30th. “COAG Almeria requested the measure because of the importance it would have on the sector’s profitability, as [dichlorophen] is highly effective against nematodes, which are well established in Almeria, and a compatible treatment with solarisation and biofumigation,” the union says. Vegetable producers have suffered losses due to the pest, it adds. Dichlorophen is banned in the EU except for certain essential uses.
