EU mulls 1,3-D phase-out extension
The European Commission has asked EU member states for information on existing use of fumigants as part of its review of a possible extension to the phase-out deadline for the nematicide, 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D). The Commission decided in 2006 not to re-register 1,3-D and set an initial phase-out date for March 20th 2009. However, it included an option to extend this for a further 18 months, in view of 1,3-D's role as an alternative to the ozone-depleting fumigant, methyl bromide ( Agrow No 530, p 9). The Commission is seeking details on whether or not member states have any existing methyl bromide approvals.
