EU sets phase-out dates for dichlobenil
The European Commission has instructed EU member states to withdraw authorisations for the herbicide, dichlobenil, by March 18th 2009, and to allow existing stocks to be sold and used by March 18th 2010. This follows a vote by the EU regulatory committee in May not to re-register the active ingredient, which was in the third round of the EU review of existing ais ( Agrow No 545, p 10). The Commission has set the same withdrawal dates for the soil fumigant, methyl bromide, which was also subject to a committee vote in May. Methyl bromide is already being phased out as an ozone depleter.
