Spanish GM-free zones are "invalid"
The regional declarations in Spain of genetically modified free areas are invalid. That is the opinion of the Minister of the Environment and Agriculture, Elena Espinosa. The declaration of GM free zones has “no judicial validity” as the regions do not have competent authority status, but the EU has. If anyone were to plant EU-authorised GM crops in such areas, they would not be contravening any laws. Regions such as the Basque country have declared themselves to be GM-free in recent years in Spain and other EU countries ( Agrow No 526, p 14).
