US pesticide cuts for at-risk fish
The US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has called for restrictions on the use of three organophosphate insecticides to reduce risks to endangered salmon. The NMFS has concluded that chlorpyrifos, diazinon and malathion are likely to jeopardise 27 endangered or threatened salmon populations and impact critical habitats for 25 out of 26 listed populations. The NMFS has issued its “biological opinion” to the EPA as part of a legal settlement with environmentalist and fishing groups ( Agrow No 549, p 16). It must issue opinions on 37 pesticides by February 29th 2012.
