New bio-insecticide in Brazil
A new bio-insecticide based on the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis ( Bt) has been launched in Brazil for use on a variety of crops against lepitopteran pests. The product has been developed by the national IPM company, Bthek Biotecnologia (Brasilia), and the biotechnology and genetic resource arm of the Brazilian agricultural research corporation, the Embrapa Recursos Geneticos e Biotecnologia. They have introduced the bio-insecticide, Ponto.Final, for the control of: soybean pests, such, as velvetbean caterpillar ( Anticarsia gemmatalis); horticultural pests, such as, diamondback moths ( Plutella xylostella); and maize pests, such as, fall armyworms ( Spodoptera frugiperda) among others. The product is authorised for use in organic farming. It is the first product to be developed between the partners for use on agricultural crops.
