US re-examines GM alfalfa

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on two lines of genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant alfalfa nearly a year after their deregulation was ruled illegal. In February 2007, a US court found that the APHIS had violated the National Environmental Protection Act by failing to prepare an EIS before clearing the commercial release of Monsanto/Forage Genetics International's Roundup Ready alfalfa in 2005 (Agrow No 514, p 14). An injunction banning the sale of the GM seed was put in place until an EIS has been prepared (Agrow No 519, p 11).
