EU Agriculture Ministers in favour of end to set-aside:
The majority of EU Agriculture Ministers appear to be in favour of ending the EU set-aside scheme, reports Brussels news service AgraFacts. At their recent meeting, only the Belgian delegation called for the scheme to be retained until 2013, it adds. The European Commission is considering the future of set-aside as part of a review of the EU Common Agricultural Policy. Some members of the European Parliament support the abolition of set-aside because of low cereal stocks and adverse weather (Agrow No 536, p 7), while others stress that the scheme's environmental benefits must be preserved (Agrow No 536, p 5).
