Brazil MPs OK pro-GMO moves
The Brazilian Parliament's lower house, the House of Deputies, has approved two measures favouring the genetically modified seed industry. The passing of the provisional measure, 327/06, allows the planting of GM crops in areas surrounding conservation areas. A decree was passed late last year establishing a distance of 500 m between GM planted crops and the conservation areas (Agrow No 509, p 17), but it requires the passing of measure 327/06 to become valid. The regulation does not cover areas of environmental protection, APAs. Before the measure can come into force, it will have to be passed by the upper house, the Senate.
