Denmark's new pesticide use-reduction tool:
In a bid to reduce further the use of pesticides, Danish researchers have come up with a farm management tool, the "Plantvaern OnLine". The Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS) and Advisers from the Danish Agricultural Advisory Service jointly developed the tool, which is based on records kept by farmers. They are seeking to extend the system to use regional data in order to reduce the record-keeping burden. The tool will target fungicide use, as well as herbicide use on spring barley and wheat. Other factors have already resulted in a considerable reduction in the use of fungicides, senior scientist of the Department of Integrated Pest Management, Lise Nistrup Jorgensen, says. The device is expected to lead to an even greater reduction, she adds.
