Monsanto to test pest-resistant soya in US?
The US EPA is seeking public comment on an application by Monsanto to test genetically modified insect-resistant soybeans under an experimental use permit (EUP). MON87701 soybeans produce the Bt Cry1Ac toxin for the control of lepidopteran pests. Only a small portion of the US soybean crop is significantly affected by lepidopteran pests, but the tests are aimed at supporting planned commercialisation of the GM soybeans in South America, the EPA points out. The EUP application covers 56 acres (23 ha) of soybeans in 17 states. It is open to public comment until April 20th.
